40-year-old Portuguese trainer, Antonio Conceicao has had his contract extended as Cameroon’s national team coach after guiding his football soldiers to produce an impressive performance at the just rounded off AFCON 2021 in the country, placing the Indomitable Lions at the third position in the tournament.
This means if Cameroon qualifies for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and AFCON 2023, Conceicao will captain the ship.
The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Prof. Narcisse Mouelle Kombi made the revelation on “HEBDO”, a program on Cameroon Radio Television recently.
The Sports boss outlined some salient points why Antonio was not relieved from his duty post.
He revealed that the country is planning to rebuild a team that has shown progress in the African nation’s tournament, and that the best thing to do was not to cut off the head while trying to reconstruct the team.
“This team has shown a lot of good things and there is no reason for cutting its head off. This is a team that must get back to work for future deadlines. The priority is not to destabilize the team by decapitating or cutting it off from its head coach”
The Minister understood not everyone’s performance could be the same.
“I am a teacher I don’t expect all my students to have 20/20. This team has shown a lot of good things and it should not only be about exciting coaches. The priority is the stability of this team; especially as we prepare for the games against Algeria for a place in the 2022 World Cup”.
Cameroonians are now looking forward to seeing how Coach Conceicao moulds up the Indomitable Lions to qualify and grab the trophies that will be displayed in Qatar and Ivory Coast in the 2022 Word and the 2023 African football challenges.
