Some students of the University of Bamenda have received cheques as prizes for participating in the 2nd edition of “3 minutes to convince CAYS.”
This was the outcome of a one-day workshop held recently at the Bamenda University campus, organized by the Cameroon Academy of Young Scientists, CAYS.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing science communication amongst staff and students in university milieux.
The five students who recently enrolled for Masters and PhD programs will represent the region during the up coming national edition of Cameroon Academy of Young Scientists, CAYS, to be held in Yaounde, May 27, 2022.
During a workshop at the campus of the University of Bamenda, science students of the institution, under the theme: “Made in Cameroon for Industrialization and Sustainable Economic Development” had the opportunity to compete for a place in Yaounde.
Of the over eight Masters and PhD students who submitted their projects for the competition at the regional level, the first five were selected by a jury and awarded a place to represent the region at the national level in Yaounde.
After winning the first prize for presenting her project, titled: “Prevalence of isoniazid drug resistant mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates in Cameroon” in three minutes, Nono Vanessa Ninkeh, a Biochemistry PhD student said her aim is to completely eradicate tuberculosis.
“We are being faced with the challenge of resistance. For us to completely eradicate this disease, we must first find out the mechanism where the resistance comes from. If we can easily detect this drug resistant tuberculosis, we will be able to manage it and it will reduce the rate in our communities,” Nono Vanessa revealed.
Other four students included; Tashie Evangeline, Abonge Laura, Ballack Ravin and Leberarus Alangeh.
The programme which is under the patronage of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation will end on May 27, 2022 in Yaounde at the national level, where five participants from each region shall meet to see who is able to convince CAYS in his/her project within three minutes to back home the sum of 500,000frs plus other opportunities.
