The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has suspended all matches that were scheduled at the Olembe stadium for the weekend.
CAF’s President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe made the decision known during a press conference Tuesday, January 25 in Yaounde.
According to Motsepe, matches have been halted at the 60 thousand capacity stadium for proper investigations to go on.
“There’s zero tolerance on circumstances that could result to people being injured or losing their lives, we have to take emergency now,” Patrice Motsepe said, adding that he has called for a meeting with the Local Organizing Committee Wednesday, January 26.
He made the declaration following a stampede at Olembe stadium which resulted in 8 deaths and over 40 injured last
Monday.
Motsepe added that all matches programmed at the said stadium will hold instead at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.
Regretting the situation, Motsepe revealed that investigations have been open to see exactly what really transpired at the stadium.
He added that investigations will extend till Friday.
“The Local Organizing Committee is responsible for the safety and security of the people, but we are partners,” CAF’s President averred.
It remains unclear when matches will resume at the Olembe stadium, but it is believed the edifice will host the closing ceremony on February 09.
State officials including the Minister of Sports, Minister of Public Health and others have visited the injured who are currently receiving treatment in Yaounde.
